I believe season two is the ultimate challenge for showrunners. Imagine you have an idea for a show. You put the juiciest bits in the pilot. The show is greenlit for season one. You put your ideas into season one, and if you don’t know whether there will be season two or not, they are most (if not all) of your best ideas.

And then there’s season two…

Yet, some seasons two are the best seasons of the series. Maybe because the characters have grown comfortable with each other. Maybe because the showrunners have been more confident. Maybe because there are lots of feedback from season one.

So I’m going to have a look at some season twos of my favorite shows.

Atlanta

Season two shows that things are getting even harder to Earn. Nothing is settled. All ends are loose. The most talked-about episode is Teddy Perkins, which is creepy and brilliant. My personal favorite is FUBU, which at time hits too close to home.
Compared with season one: On par, maybe better.

Community

Lots of good stories. Interesting character developments. Okay, it’s been a while since I watched it but of the three seasons that actually matter, season two is my favorite.
Compared with season one: Better!

Silicon Valley

A lot of things going on in season two, and it seems like Richard got beaten up (figuratively) in every episode. Season one had the geekiest dick joke of all times, but season two had its moments.
Compared with season one: Different, but still as funny.

Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Season one is brilliant and super-funny. Season two is still funny but a bit weird, like some things don’t add up. Zachary Levi plays Dr Benjamin Ettenberg, Midge’s new love interest. Lenny Bruce returns, singing his heart out and crushing me to crumbles.
Compared with season one: Slightly less good, but Zachary Levi!

The Orville

Everyone praises The Orville season two. The show touches many different buttons. Sometimes it’s the ideals to do the right things, the other time it’s the dream of a perfect girl. And a perfect relationship. And a perfect career. Confession: my biggest laugh was Bortus’ frolicking-by-the-lake scene, it’s just so absurd and funny.
Compared with season one: Improving in an unseen direction.

Derry Girls

The pilot was the funniest thing I see in a while, and season one finale was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I find episodes one and two of season two as not living up to season one, yet. But episode three has the absurdity that we all love and cherish. I still have two episodes that I haven’t watched.
Compared with season one: So far so good.
