I’d been fascinated with the idea of circular economy for some times. I lump it with valorisation and value chains and the likes, don’t really dwell into each specific definition, if any. A few weeks ago, I asked J to be a speaker in an upcoming mini-symposium. I proposed a (somewhat vague) theme about LCA and circular economy and to my surprise, he said he didn’t like the term. CE, I mean. It suggests that it is an end of itself, while we should focus on efficient use of whatever scarce materials we have. Since then, my fascination has faltered.

I used to watch The Office, then Parks and Rec and enjoyed both. I also enjoyed Community S02E16 Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking. But then, of course, because I’m that kind of fan, I watched the episode with Dan Harmon’s commentary.

This is Dan speaking, not Abed

Dan bitterly jokingly opens the commentary by saying that the episode was his offensive swipe at Community’s successful competitors namely Modern Family, Parks and Rec, and The Office. Dan thinks that mockumentary is kinda cheat because ‘you can jump cut, you can whip pan, you can do VO, you can have people addressing the camera, explaining jokes. It about triples the amount of jokes you’re be able to do per minute.’ More about it here.

So the point is, I’m just prone to ‘appeal to authority’ fallacy. J’s my supervisor so he’s the authority. And I think Community is one of the peak TVs and Dan Harmon is a genius so that’s that. But truth is, I’m just as easily swayed by random guy on twitter if his/her previous arguments established an aura of authority. So I don’t know, I guess it’s okay as long as I’m conscious of the thought process and can retrace back the change of mind?
